Battleship Rugby Ignites Faster Play with New Series

May 19th, 2016

MOBILE, Ala. -  With support from the Mobile Sports Authority, the Battleship Rugby Club will launch their inaugural Battleship Rugby Invitational Tournament Series (B.R.I.T.) on Saturday, May 28th, 2016 with the “Seersucker Sevens” Rugby Tournament Presented by the Mobile Sports Authority. The tournament will highlight the newly-popular seven-sided line-up per team (versus the standard 15-player per team version) bringing a faster pace of play to Battleship Park. Tournament play will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning featuring teams ranging in ages from youth to senior. Play will conclude at 3 p.m.

The BRIT Seersucker Sevens Presented by the Mobile Sports Authority, as with all BRITS battles, will be held at the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Memorial Park on the Causeway which creates a one-of-a-kind setting with the famous U.S.S Alabama Battleship as a backdrop for the tournament.

“We are very excited to be hosting another rugby tournament at the Battleship Memorial Park.  The tournament will showcase the fast-paced, hard hitting, Sevens style rugby of men and women teams from Senior, Collegiate, and U-19 and feature youth age teams competing in flag rugby.” Battleship Rugby President, Taylor McElroy, stated. “Sevens style rugby will get a lot of exposure during the Olympics this Summer in Rio and we hope the exposure will help grow rugby in the Mobile and Baldwin counties.  All ages and genders are encouraged to come to the tournament to watch rugby live and learn why it’s the fastest growing sport in the nation.”

“With the addition of ‘Rugby Sevens’ for the first time to this year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, this new event is a way for Mobile area sports fans to come out and watch a version of what we will see this summer at the 2016 Summer Games,” added Danny Corte, Executive Director of the Mobile Sports Authority. “Even though the Sevens game itself has been around a long time, we are excited to be bringing this version of rugby to Mobile for the first time.”
