Gulf South Conference Golf Championships Return to Mobile/RTJ at Magnolia Grove

Jul 8th, 2019

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference Men’s & Women’s Golf Championships will return to Mobile's Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove in partnership with the Mobile Sports Authority for the 2020 and 2021 events.

"We are glad to return to Magnolia Grove for two more years," Commissioner Matt Wilson said. "The Mobile Sports Authority and Magnolia Grove created a fantastic event for our student-athletes. We look forward to our continued partnership."

The event will officially be recognized as the GSC Golf Championships presented by the Mobile Sports Authority.

"We’re excited to have the Gulf South Conference returning to Mobile for 2020 and 2021 for their Men’s & Women’s Golf Championships," said Danny Corte, Executive Director of the Mobile Sports Authority. "After hosting the GSC Championship Tournament for the first time this past April, we appreciate not only the opportunity to host again, but also the confidence the GSC has shown in both the Mobile Sports Authority and our event partner, Magnolia Grove Golf Club, by agreeing to return to our area. We look forward to working with Commissioner Matt Wilson and the GSC staff once again to make these championship tournaments an experience the young athletes will always remember."

Magnolia Grove was named one of the "Top 50 Public Courses" by Golf World Magazine readers. The Crossings and Falls courses are also listed in Golf Digest’s "Places to Play" as two of the nation’s great value courses.

The Crossings course, which has hosted LPGA Tour events, provides an open parkland type ambiance. Several water features and crushed oyster shell waste areas were added during the recent renovations.

The renovated Falls course reopened in 2010 as the only par-71 course on the Trail. The course is characterized by large, liberally contoured Mini Verde greens and massive cloverleaf bunkers.

The GSC has won five NCAA Championships in men's golf, while five golfers from the league have also earned the men's individual national title. A men's team has advanced to the match play portion of the NCAA Championship in each of the last four years. Women's golf continues to grow in the Gulf South, as Lee was the first team in league history to advance to the NCAA Championship in 2017, and UWF's Paloma Vaccaro was the national runner-up in 2018.
